EU validation of Ceditect® BSE completed
Since February 2002, Eurofins Analytico Food has been accredited by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality with conducting the screening of BSE for Dutch slaughterhouses. This is done in the special purpose-built high risk-class laboratory in Heerenveen. Since accreditation, tens of thousands of tests have been carried out, so ample experience has been acquired. For validation of the new Cedi-Diagnostics BSE test, CediTect ® BSE, Cedi-Diagnostics was looking for a reliable and extremely precise laboratory. Analytico was able to meet the stringent requirements.
Advantages
The CediTect ® BSE is a so-called filter chemiluminescence ELISA for detecting BSE in cattle. For validation of the test more than 6000 samples, both negative and positive, were investigated with the aid of the Western Blot technique and the CediTect ® BSE test. Sensitivity was calculated on the basis of the number of positive samples found. Specificity was also tested. This amounted to 100% and thus turned out to be extremely reliable. For Eurofins customers the new BSE test has many advantages. High reliability aside, the test can be implemented in a robot system. This means greater efficiency and a favourable cost price. CediTect ® BSE, additionally, is faster than other methods: approx. 4 hours from intake to result! The processing of meat can be started earlier and the sale of by-products can possibly be accelerated. The approval of the EU is expected this autumn.
