Detection of bird flu in foodstuffs
Eurofins developed a test system which is able to detect the RNA of the bird flu virus (avian influenza).
The bird flu test system consists of:
* RT-PCR technology
* Transcription of the virus RNA into DNA and amplification of the DNA
* Fluorescent detection of the DNA
The bird flu screening assay only detects the H5N1 virus. A positive result implies that the analysed sample contains RNA of the bird flu virus. This screening-test is applicable to any type of material like poultry meat, eggs, eggshells, feathers, feathermeal and bonemeal.
